Read something like this a while ago and its bothered me for a long time.
I’m not sure if satisfaction should be a life goal. Or I’m not sure if it can be for me.
Definitions of satisfaction include “a state of being pleased, proud, happy, and content” — good stuff, but then there’s the shadow side of satisfaction: satisfaction can also mean “a state of being smug, pleased with oneself, complacent, settling for.”
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others.
Martha Graham put it best: “No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. It is not a dissatisfaction created by a demanding perfectionism that aims to please others. Graham’s dissatisfaction is divine because it is the result of the artist’s drive to create something that reaches empyreal heights.
